While the Islamic Republic has officially remained silent, and its news agencies neutral on the assassination of two Israeli diplomats, regime-affiliated Telegram channels, “journalists,” and social media personalities are celebrating the attack. Bisimchi Media, a Telegram channel presumably linked to security forces, praised the suspected assailant, Elias Rodriguez, calling him a “lovely young gentleman,” and writing, “May Allah bless you, warrior. We salute your courage.” In a separate post, the channel noted that one of the victims had attended speeches by Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi and events organized by NUFDI and wrote, “The dumbass used to go to speeches of [the Prince], no wonder he got killed.” IRGC-associated Telegram channel Sepah Cybery framed the killing as retaliation for Yaron Lischinsky allegedly threatening Houthi leaders with Israeli strikes in response to their missile attacks against Israel. The same message was repeated by “political analyst” Abdollah Ganji, who added that Lischinsky “was sent to hell.” Mohammad Taheri, a “journalist” with IRGC-affiliated Tasnim, prayed, “May there be more [such attacks].” U.S.-based “journalist” and former IRGC member Akbar Ganji blamed the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad for the murder, describing it as “murder to silence domestic and foreign critics.” He told his 28k followers on X (formerly Twitter), “Never forget that Mossad was and is the most powerful, largest, and most skilled terrorist organization in the world. Mossad is trying to turn the tide of global condemnation of genocide in a different direction. Always point the finger of blame at Mossad first until proven otherwise.” A so-called “reformist” social media personality, Amir Tanha, wrote, “They are even willing to kill their own agents on American soil to prevent a [nuclear] deal.” A social media influencer close to the clerical establishment with 149k followers on X, Omid Narimani, posted pictures of the alleged assailant and praised him, writing, “Men of Allah are this steadfast and calm after performing their divine duty.” An anonymous account with alleged ties to security forces and 234k followers on X posted a picture of the assailant and wrote, “The path of Sinwar continues,” referring to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, chief architect of the October 7th attacks. Another influencer with 13.5k followers, Mohmmad Akbarzadeh, wrote, “What Elias Rodriguez did (killing two Israeli embassy employees in Washington) is a natural reaction to the indifference of governments to the regime’s brutal killings and genocide in Gaza. Those affiliated with the Zionist regime will not be safe anywhere in the world, and they know this better than anyone!” An “investigative journalist” close to the “reformists,” Fateme Karimkhan, framed the terror attack as retaliation for Israeli soldiers firing shots near a diplomatic delegation in the West Bank. She tried to stir anti-LGBTQ sentiments to foster support for the attack, writing, “Hours after the Israeli army opened fire on foreign diplomats in the West Bank, two diplomats attached to the Israeli embassy were shot and killed in Washington after visiting a program on LGBTQ+ rights at the Central Jewish Museum in DC.”
