Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei today tied maintaining the regime’s “full nuclear cycle” to Iran’s “sovereignty” and “independence,” while rejecting any halt to uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. An immediate halt to enrichment, or the phasing out of enrichment, has been a demand of the United States in nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic. Khamenei made these remarks in an address to a crowd of supporters and top officials at the Mausoleum of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, marking the 36th anniversary of Khomeini’s death. On a “full nuclear cycle,” Khamenei framed possession of a “full nuclear cycle” and nuclear capabilities as a point of national pride and a “bedrock” for other industries and sectors. He added, “Today, Iran possesses the full cycle of nuclear power. He then confessed that he can’t. Since then, all elements of our nuclear industry have been strengthened. He then confessed that he can’t dismantle [the nuclear program].
